Kotor Fortress Walls Trail

Kotor Fortress Walls Trail: Stone Steps to San Giovanni

The Kotor Fortress Walls Trail is a short, steep out-and-back hike from Kotor Old Town in Montenegro to the Castle of San Giovanni above the Bay of Kotor. The route is 2.5 km return, with around 254 m of ascent and roughly 1,350 uneven stone steps. Allow 1.5–2 hours round trip, or longer for photos and rests. It is moderate rather than technical, but the exposed climb feels much harder in summer heat. It suits hikers wanting a compact half-day route with major views and history.

Route Overview

The official ticketed trailhead is at the River Gate, also called the North Gate, inside Kotor Old Town. From there the path climbs continuously on old stone steps and rocky switchbacks, passing the Church of Our Lady of Remedy roughly halfway up before reaching the Castle of San Giovanni, also known as St John’s Fortress. The return is by the same route, so there is no transport link or point-to-point logistics to arrange. Start early in May, September or October for cooler conditions and fewer people. For other coastal walks, compare the Budva to Sveti Stefan Coastal Path and the Bar to Old Ulcinj Trail.

History of the Kotor Fortifications

St John’s hill was fortified in Illyrian times, and the fortress was reconstructed in the 6th century under Byzantine emperor Justinian I. The walls were later greatly expanded and reinforced during Venetian rule from 1420 to 1797, before passing to the Austrian Habsburg monarchy. In 1979, the fortifications, Kotor Old Town and surrounding landscape were inscribed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor, Montenegro’s only cultural World Heritage site.

Notable highlights

  • Castle of San Giovanni / St John’s Fortress: The hilltop fortress crowns the climb and brings together Illyrian, Venetian and Austrian layers of military architecture. It is the main viewpoint over Kotor Old Town and the Bay of Kotor.
  • Church of Our Lady of Remedy / Our Lady of Health: This small stone chapel from 1518 sits roughly halfway up the route. It is a useful rest point and a classic photo stop above the red roofs of Kotor.
  • Bay of Kotor panoramas: As the walls rise, the view opens across the fjord-like Bay of Kotor and the Adriatic coast. The short distance hides how rewarding the outlook becomes with each switchback.
  • Kotor Old Town walls: The wider fortification circuit has an outer circumference of about 4.5 km, with walls up to 20 m high. The hike links the waterfront town directly to the mountain fortress above it.
  • Hidden Ladder of Kotor: Some hikers use this free, unticketed back-country goat path via Spiljari and the ruined Church of St John as an alternative ascent or descent. It bypasses the main gate but is separate from the official ticketed walls route.

Challenges to expect

Expect a relentless exposed climb on uneven, centuries-old stone steps and rocky switchback paths. There is little shade, so summer heat can make an otherwise moderate route feel strenuous. The descent also needs care, especially on worn stone. Entry is usually ticketed in the main season, and hikers must not remain on the walls after 22:00.

Day 1
Kotor Old Town to St. John Fortress and Return
Approx. 2.5km

Begin your hike at the base of Kotor Old Town, near the North Gate or the river Skurda, and follow the marked stone steps as they ascend sharply along the ancient city walls. The route passes through historic gateways and climbs past the Church of Our Lady of Remedy, situated roughly halfway up the route, offering a scenic rest stop with views of the bay. Continue to ascend along a combination of paved and rocky steps, navigating steep and occasionally uneven surfaces until you reach the summit at St. John Fortress. After exploring the fortress and taking in panoramic views, retrace your steps carefully down the same route, watching for slippery stone sections, and return to your starting point in Old Town Kotor.
